Why he boycotts:
My first bout with boycotting came from a horrific encounter with one of the girl scouts of america on a gloomy weekday afternoon. I was simply trying to tell her that she shouldn't allow herself to serve as a pawn to the greed-driven powers at the pinnacle of her farcical organization. She said something about wanting to win a schwin 5-speed, kicked me in the kneecap and began beating me with her glossy order-filled clipboard. By the time her mother ran up from the sidewalk the tides of waged war were about to take a turn, if not for the intervention. And, let's just say she won't be ringing my doorbell again. I buy from my neices anyway.

Why he boycotts:
You know how when the class bully pushes down the littlest kid in school and steals their lunch money you grumble to yourself that someday they're going to get whats coming to them.

Or when you compare your opinions and ideals to the masses and discover no commonality and then wince because that great body of lemmings is screwing up your life in ways you would have never imagined.

Well, I was born with a gene that compulses me to seek out ways to correct these situations. I can't seem to let them go. I would have been the ultimate New Yorker, cut me off in line and your guaranteed a first rate Bronx cheer at minimum.

And since I'm savvy enough to realize that society wouldn't condone more than half the methods of retaliation I've considered, I'm left with Boycott City...

Why he boycotts:
I always buy gas at BPs and I always avoid Exxons. When a friend asked about this, I tried to explain. He then said: "They're still a gas company. They're still evil." Well, yes and no.

In a perfect world, I'd be able to walk everywhere or my car would run off of compost from my yard. In a perfect world, smart growth projects and in-fill development would be affordable, not some progressive real estate trend solely within the economic reach of those few lucky souls who can afford to pay top dollar for their conscience. In a perfect world, many things would be different, but should we let that stifle our desire to make more responsible decisions about where we spend our money...of course not. With even the smallest purchase, we can make choices that fall closer to our own notions of what is morally sound on the vast economic continuum. Granted, some would argue that morality and economics are fundamentally at odds to begin with and it is a point well taken. But, for me, the personal boycott is a grassroots movement of one and I don't do it to subvert big business. I boycott so I can sleep at night.

Michaelcosm's rationale for boycotting is worthy of an entire essay. Find it here.
